Vascular Surgery takes care of conditions and diseases involving the arteries and veins in the body. This area of speciality covers blood vessels from the head to the toes. The spectrum of diseases covered range from life-threatening conditions like aortic aneurysms (swelling of the main artery in the body), limb-threatening conditions like Peripheral Arterial Disease (narrowing and blockage of the arteries carrying blood to the legs) to common conditions like varicose veins (dilated and swollen veins in the legs).
Interventions for vascular surgical conditions are broadly divided into 2 large groups. The traditional interventions are open surgery where blood vessels are repaired or bypassed via incisions made through the skin. The other group of interventions that are becoming increasingly popular are Endovascular interventions where access into the blood vessel is made via a skin puncture (thereby avoiding a long skin incision) and catheters and balloons are used to treat the diseased vessel.
