Factors such as diet, ageing, family history, and certain lifestyle habits can increase the risk of these conditions.
Consulting a qualified colorectal specialist at Nexus Surgical ensures you receive a detailed diagnosis, timely treatment, and a personalised care plan, helping you manage symptoms, prevent complications, and maintain long-term bowel health.

What is Colorectal Surgery?
Colorectal surgery encompasses a range of procedures that treat conditions affecting the colon, rectum, and anus. The recommended procedure depends on your diagnosis, the severity of the condition, and your overall health. Some operations use minimally invasive techniques with small incisions for quicker recovery, while others may require traditional open surgery.
The goal of a colorectal surgeon is to help restore normal bowel function and relieve symptoms like pain, bleeding, or blockage. Addressing the problem promptly allows you to regain comfort, confidence, and get back to your daily routine.
Colorectal Surgery Diagnosis and Treatment Options
Screening and Early Detection
Regular colorectal cancer screenings are reliable ways to spot problems before they cause symptoms. Detecting these issues early often facilitates a quick recovery while improving long-term health.
Some common screening methods include:
- Colonoscopy
- Imaging tests such as CT Colonography, Abdominal X-Ray, Ultrasound, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Colonoscopy
- Fecal tests
Common Surgical Procedures
Removal of part of the colon through small incisions
Surgical removal of problematic haemorrhoids
Removal of precancerous polyps
Correcting prolapse or fissures or fistula

Colorectal Surgeon FAQs
When should I see a colorectal surgeon?
One should see a colorectal surgeon when there are changes in bowel movements, blood in stools, piles, perianal symptoms or abdominal symptoms. Colorectal surgeons are also experienced in performing endoscopy.
What is the difference between a general surgeon and a colorectal surgeon?
A general surgeon is trained to perform a wide repertoire of operations on different organ systems. After completing general surgery training, a colorectal surgeon is one who receives further subspecialisation training in advanced surgical procedures for colorectal diseases. A colorectal surgeon is, therefore, more skilled to treat diseases of the colon, rectum, anus, including complex cases.
Is a colorectal surgeon the same as a gastroenterologist?
A colorectalsurgeon is a general surgeon who receives further sub-specialisation training in the surgical management of diseases of the digestive system, in particular the colon, the rectum and the anal canal. A gastroenterologist is a physician who also receives training in the treatment of diseases of the digestive system. However, unlike a colorectal surgeon or a general surgeon, gastroenterologists do not perform surgery. General surgeons, including colorectal surgeons, as well as gastroenterologists can perform endoscopy such as gastroscopy and colonoscopy, as these are basic skill sets to examine the digestive tract.
When is surgery necessary for colorectal conditions?
Surgery is needed when non-surgical treatments fail, for structural problems, or for colorectal cancers and precancerous lesions.
How long is the recovery period after colorectal surgery?
Recovery varies by procedure, but minimally invasive techniques often allow patients to resume normal activities within a few weeks, while more complex surgeries may require longer recovery.
