What is an endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)?

ERCP is a useful diagnostic and therapeutic procedure with combination of endoscope and X-rays imaging to examine and treat health problems related to liver, pancreas, gallbladder and bile ducts. Your doctor can remove bile duct stones, biopsy tumour or deploy stent to unblock obstruction bile ducts if required.

Who needs an ERCP?

Your doctor will recommend ERCP evaluation if you have symptoms of yellow skin and eyes, pale stools or tea colour urine that suggestive of obstruction jaundice clinically.

How do I prepare for an ERCP?

You will have to fast for 6 hours prior to elective ERCP due to sedation requirement during the procedure. Sometimes, you may require general anaesthesia with airway protection under emergency ERCP for severe bile ducts infection with fever known as cholangitis.

What can I expect after an ERCP?

It is normal for you to feel drowsy and may experience sore throat, mild abdominal discomfort and bloating immediately after ERCP.

You will have to wait few hours until the sedative effect wears off before going home. It is encouraged to arrange your relative or friend to accompany you home as you will not be able to drive home alone.

Some patients will have to stay overnight at the hospital for close monitoring depending on medical conditions.
