Colorectal Cancer Screening Singapore
Colorectal Cancer Screening
Colorectal cancer often develops silently without symptoms in its early stages, making timely screening one of the most effective ways to catch it before it becomes serious. Whether you’re approaching age 50 or have risk factors that warrant earlier checks, understanding your screening options can make all the difference in protecting your colorectal health.
What is Colorectal Cancer?
Colorectal cancer is one of Singapore’s most prevalent cancers, affecting more than 1,865 cases each year. It is the most common cancer amongst Singaporean men, and the second most common cancer amongst women. The disease typically develops in the large intestine (colon) or rectum, usually beginning as small, benign growths called polyps that form on the inner lining. Over time, some of these polyps can transform into cancer – a process that typically takes several years.
You may experience changes in bowel habits, recurrent abdominal pain and other symptoms, as listed here.
Preventing Colorectal Cancer through Screening
Regular screening allows doctors to detect the disease, hopefully at an early stage so that the chance of cure is possible. Using colonoscopy as the method of screening can potentially identify and remove polyps before they become cancerous, effectively interrupting the disease’s development. Thus, colonoscopy has the added advantage of possibly preventing cancer through the removal of polyps. Through vigilant and regular checks, colorectal cancer can be detected at its earliest, most treatable stages, or even prevented entirely by removing precancerous growths.
Besides early detection of colorectal cancer, regular screening also benefits people by:
- Reducing their risk of death from colorectal cancer
- Improving their quality of life, as early-stage treatment is often less invasive and more effective
- Offering peace of mind, if they are at average or increased risk
Who Should Go For Colorectal Cancer Screening?
While routine screening is recommended for the general population, certain individuals face a higher risk of developing colorectal cancer and may need to begin screening earlier or undergo it more frequently:
- Adults aged 50 and above are generally advised to undergo regular colorectal screening, even if they feel well and have no symptoms
- Individuals with a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps may need to start screening earlier, often from age 40, or 10 years before the youngest case in the family
- People with inflammatory bowel disease, such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease, are at increased risk
Those with genetic syndromes like familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) or Lynch syndrome should be screened at a younger age and more frequently as advised by their specialist
Types of Colorectal Cancer Screening Tests Available
Several colorectal cancer screening methods are available in Singapore:
Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT)
- A non-invasive stool test that checks for hidden blood in the stool
- Typically done annually
- Convenient and can be done at home
- If positive, further testing (e.g. colonoscopy) is recommended
Colonoscopy
- A detailed examination of the colon and rectum using a flexible camera
- Allows for both detection and removal of polyps during the procedure
- Usually recommended every 10 years for average-risk individuals
- Considered the gold standard for colorectal cancer screening
Flexible Sigmoidoscopy
- Examines only the lower part of the colon
- May be combined with FIT in some screening programmes
CT Colonography (Virtual Colonoscopy)
- A special type of CT scan that provides images of the colon
- Less invasive but requires bowel preparation
- May still require a colonoscopy if abnormalities are found
Your doctor will recommend the most appropriate screening method based on your age, risk level, and overall health.
